Your domain name is one of the few branding decisions that's genuinely hard to undo later — changing it means new business cards, a new Google listing built from scratch, and every old link and email pointing to the wrong place. Worth getting right the first time. Here's what to actually weigh up.
.co.za, .com, or both?
If you trade primarily inside South Africa, .co.za immediately signals "local business" to South African customers, and it's usually cheaper and easier to register than the equivalent .com. If you sell internationally, or plan to, .com carries more weight outside the country. Many businesses register both and point them at the same site — it's inexpensive insurance against a competitor grabbing the other one later.
Your exact business name, or something shorter?
Where possible, match your domain to your actual business or brand name — it's what people will instinctively type. If your registered business name is long or awkward as a web address, a shortened, easy-to-say version usually beats an exact-but-clunky match. The test: could you say it out loud over the phone without spelling it?
Keep it short, and skip the hyphens
Every extra character and every hyphen is another chance for someone to mistype it, mishear it, or forget it. "yourbakery.co.za" will always outperform "your-bakery-and-cafe-shop.co.za" for memorability, even if the longer one feels more descriptive.
Avoid numbers and awkward spellings
A domain like "4uhosting.co.za" might make sense written down, but said out loud it's ambiguous — is that the digit 4 or the word "for"? Stick to real words wherever you can.
Check social media availability too
Before you commit, do a quick search for the same name on Instagram, Facebook and X. Having your domain and your social handles match makes your business far easier to find and feel consistent — one more reason brand identity and domain choice go hand in hand.
Once you've decided
Register it sooner rather than later. Good, simple domain names get taken quickly, and holding off "until the website is ready" is one of the most common (and avoidable) regrets we hear from new clients.
